International News: Cubans wait for days in line to buy diesel

Posted: Wednesday, July 27, 2022. 9:32 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Cuban drivers are waiting in lines for days amidst a massive diesel fuel shortage, Los Angeles Times report.

The lines have become common in Cuba, where officials are reportedly sending the island’s scarce diesel to power generation plants rather than filling stations for vehicles.

Cubans say this is one of the worst fuel shortages they have experienced.

Drivers wait and get updates daily as they wait for tanker trucks to arrive with fuel.

Experts say that the country cannot afford to buy all the diesel it needs and what it has is being directed to generate power.

“What we are seeing is what we call the domino effect,” said Jorge Piñon, director of the Latin America and Caribbean Energy Program at the University of Texas at Austin.

“The collapse of the thermoelectric plants has caused an increased demand for diesel generation groups. Venezuela has not been sending Cuba the quantity of diesel it needs, so Cuba has had to take part of the supply that was dedicated to the transport sector for the diesel-electric generation groups,” he added.

Meanwhile, in the aftermath of recent power outages, President Miguel Díaz-Canel has explained the situation on national television and toured thermoelectric plants.

Cubans continue to adapt in any way they can to the shortage.
