Monkeypox emergency could last months, with window closing to stop spread, experts say

Posted: Wednesday, July 27, 2022. 9:22 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Experts advising the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monkeypox say that the window is closing to stop the spread of the disease, Reuters report.

Cases of Monkeypox are increasing around the world raising concerns that it might take months for the outbreak to peak.

There are now more than 19,000 cases of Monkeypox reported around the world.

Scientists around the world are closely monitoring the Monkeypox situation and say that it could be sustained for several months.

“We have to get in front of this,” said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.

“It’s clear the window of opportunity for doing so is closing,” added Rimoin.

WHO has declared Monkeypox a global health emergency meaning urgent action including vaccination, testing, and contact tracing needs to be done, experts said.

Symptoms of Monkeypox include fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, and bumps on parts of the body.

Experts say if Monkeypox is not contained over the world, there is a risk of flare-ups from travelers.
