By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Sports Council under the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Transport is hosting the first CODICADER Physical Education Congress here in Belize.

“We welcome representation from countries of Central America,” said the NSC in a social media post.

“Belize is hosting a conference of physical education teachers to work on curriculum development. Basically, it is to share the curricula of physical education in the region,” said Julio Llinas, Belize’s representative to the Central American Isthmus Sports and Recreation Council (CODICADER).

CODICADER is Central American Integration System’s (SICA) organ that holds the Central American Students Sports Games.

Llinas said each country has four participants at the conference which runs from July 26 to 28. The delegations arrived here on Monday, July 25, and leave on Friday, July 29.

“On the first day of the conference we’re looking at the primary school’s physical education programs. Every country has an hour to present on what they are doing in their country,” said Llinas.

“On the second day, we’re going to look at secondary schools. And on the third day, we’re going to have working groups to come up with a document to be presented to the Ministers of Sports in March of 2023 at the next Minister’s Meeting of CODICADER to be held in Nicaragua.”

Llinas said that if the Ministers of Sports approve the report, SICA has offered to go a step further and share it with the Ministers of Education in all the Central American countries to ensure that we try to standardize and improve the physical education curriculum in schools throughout Central America.

“I think there is a lot that we, Belize can benefit from the other countries who have very good programs, for example for Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. They have some very strong physical education programs in their school systems,” Llinas said.
