Tren Maya, the tourist railroad that Mexico is building and Belize wants to connect to could cost up to $20 billion

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that his flagship infrastructure project, the Tren Maya could cost up to $20 billion, Reuters report.

Lopez Obrador says that “never has so much been invested” in the country.

The Tren Maya project is a 910-mile train track through the Yucatan Peninsula, which the President says is necessary for developing Mexico’s poor south.  Тhе рrојесt whісh wоuld іnсludе а trасk frоm Palenque to Chetumal crossing southeastern Mexico соuld аlѕо potentially be extending into Belize

However, environmental activists claim that the project could endanger prehistoric caves and could potentially result in losing relics forever.

Despite the legal challenges, President Lopez Obrador says that his government is advancing the project.
