Under-15 Belize Girls National Football Team travels to Tampa, Florida on Thursday to compete in the 2022 Concacaf Girls’ U-15 Championship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Under-15 Belize Girls National Football Team (BGNT) travels to Tampa Florida on Thursday to compete in the 2022 Concacaf Girls’ U-15 Championship (CGU15C).

Belize finished in sixth place out of seven in the U-15 FIFA FORWARD UNCAF Championship held in San José, Costa Rica in June.

Concacaf refers to the Girls’ U-15 Championship as a ‘developmental tournament,’ saying it features 19 Concacaf Member Associations and Wales as invited guests.

The tournament at the Hillsborough County Tournament Sportsplex in Tampa runs from July 31 to August 7.

The Concacaf championship is split into two leagues. Belize is in League B and has been placed in Group C along with Bermuda, Belize, Anguilla, and Martinique.

The BGNT’s first game will be against Anguilla on Sunday, July 31 at 9:00 am. Belize’s second game will be against Martinique on Monday, August 1 at 11:00 am, and our final match will be against Bermuda on Wednesday, August 3 at 11:00 am.

According to Concacaf, the Leagues and groups are as follows

League A

Group A: Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Wales

Group B: United States, Canada, Jamaica, Puerto Rico

League B

Group C: Bermuda, Belize, Anguilla, Martinique

Group D: Honduras, Bahamas, US Virgin Islands, Aruba

Group E: Nicaragua, Guyana, Turks and Caicos Islands, Cayman Islands

Concacaf said the best teams from the first round will qualify for the knockout stage that will be played in a single game direct elimination format.

In League A, the top two teams in each group advance to the semifinals on August 5, followed by the Final on August 7.

In League B, the three group winners plus the best second place team qualify for the semifinals on August 5, followed by the Final on August 7.

Since the format ensures that all teams will play a minimum of four games, the teams that do not make it to the knockout stage will play the fourth match for the final position in the competition.

The United States won the last Concacaf Girls’ U-15 Championship played in Bradenton, Florida, in 2018. The United States defeated Mexico 3-0 in the League A Final to claim their second title at this age level. The Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 championship.
