United Nations: Over 200 dead due to gang violence in Haiti

Posted: Wednesday, July 27, 2022. 11:40 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Statistics from the United Nations reveal that over 200 people have been killed in the gang violence in Haiti, BBC reports.

According to the report, almost half of those that were killed were residents with no ties to gangs that are fighting for control of the Cité Soleil neighborhood.

Amidst the raging violence, Haitians say they are running out of drinking water and food since deliveries are halted due to shootouts.

Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, a year ago, gang violence has escalated and there is a war between 2 criminal elements known as G9 and G-Pèp.

Between July 8 and 17, 209 people were killed, 114 of them were gang members meanwhile another 254 people were shot, more than half of them residents without links to the gangs.

Some residents have been forced to flee their homes after their homes were destroyed by gangs.

Hundreds of children have taken refuge at a high school in the capital.

Residents say they are hoping there is an end to the violence soon.
