Dog escapes jaguar attack in Mile 8 Community; others killed – Forestry Department scheduled to visit

Posted: Thursday, July 28, 2022. 9:20 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Breaking Belize News (BBN) understands the Forestry Department is scheduled to make a visit in the Western Paradise Mile 8 Community after concerned residents reported two jaguars that have killed pets in the area.

Last night a dog was reportedly mangled by one of the jaguars, losing its eye but escaping. That dog was taken for veterinary help this morning.

The resident says in February one of the jaguars attacked and killed another of his dogs. Another dog was also reportedly killed in the area by jaguar attack.

BBN understands an initial report was made in February about the jaguars. The mile 8 community on the George Price Highway is known to be a corridor for wildlife including the Baird’s tapir and jaguars though development in the area has displaced many animals and lead to collisions.
