Drug trafficking conviction lands Ladyville man a 2-year prison sentence and $10,000 fine

By BBN Staff: A Ladyville resident was given a combination sentence of a fine and prison time on a conviction of drug trafficking this week.

Twenty-seven-year-old Herbert Belloso appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, jointly charged with another man for possession of controlled drugs with the intent to supply to another, in relation to 28.9 grams of crack cocaine found on his person by police during a search.

Belloso said that he did not want to waste the court’s time and pleaded guilty to the offense, allowing the other man to go free. When asked if he had any special reason why he should not be fined and confined, Belloso said he had none to give the court.

He was sentenced to two years at the Belize Central Prison and fined $10,000, which he must pay by December 31, or he will face an additional three years in prison.

Police intercepted a Ford Ranger pickup on Tuesday evening, with Belloso and the other man inside. Officers searched the vehicle and the other man and found nothing, then found the crack in a plastic bag that Belloso had hidden in his underwear.
