By Aaron Humes: At its core, said Minister of Education Francis Fonseca, the education curriculum provides the tools for teachers to teach what matters and for students to learn what matters.

If education is not aligned with the aspirations of the country it is irrelevant, the Minister said. It is important that students are not kept to rote memory but to deeper learning and thinking.

Students are to spend their time in school learning the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for their personal growth and development.

But the work is not done, says Fonseca, as Belize needs to align its priorities and streamline the curriculum at the primary and secondary levels, and wean itself from the teat of curriculum for examination.

The 501 Academy, a national school portal and learning facility, is being developed with lessons and resources for schools, and textbooks and other equipment will follow.

There will be a place for physical education and wellness and the expressive arts and includes a place for emotional intelligence and mental wellness.

The next steps are development of subject-specific frameworks leading to specific plans.

The 2022-2023 school year is a transition for pre- and primary schools and select secondary schools and the entire system goes into place in 2023.
