By Aaron Humes: Belize is on guard against the threat of the monkeypox virus which has now been detected in Mexico, the United States, Jamaica and the Bahamas and been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Also, following the reporting of a vaccine-derived poliomyelitis case in New York, Minister of Health & Wellness Kevin Bernard assured the Cabinet of efforts to vaccinate children against polio to ensure that Belize returns to 95 percent of children in Belize vaccinated against polio.
Concerning the ongoing COVID-19 threat, just shy of 53 percent of Belizeans had received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccines as of July 26 and just over 50 percent are fully vaccinated. The latter number includes more than 26 thousand teenagers aged 12 to 17 and more than 5,600 children aged 5 to 11. To date, 49,921 booster shots have been issued.
This week Belize received 10,000 vaccine doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from India and the Government is sourcing more.
More than 66 thousand cases of COVID-19 have been reported since the start of the pandemic but there are less than 500 active cases at present even with the threat of new sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5.
