By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: About 4,000 migrants that spent 2 days outside an office at Mexico’s INM immigration agency in Huixtla stormed the building on Wednesday, Yahoo reports.
Huixtla is located about 25 miles northwest of Tapachula, a border city with Guatemala which has become a common travel area for regional migrants.
A large group of migrants stormed the building after INM officials did not respond to their requests for transit visas which would allow them to cross México en route to the United States.
The Guards could not manage to control the group and they vandalized the premises and threw rocks at the officers.
Several migrants said that the visa is necessary since it enables them to travel to Mexico’s northern border with the U.S.
Members of the caravan said that they would wait there until they obtained the visas.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection say that since the beginning of the 2022 fiscal year, over 1 million migrants have been intercepted along the U.S. border.
