By Aaron Humes: Minister of State for Education Dr. Louis Zabaneh says the new National Curriculum Framework will guide the writing of education syllabi at all levels of education.
It marks, he said, a transition to competency-based education and a removal of the burden of curriculum overload and teaching too much for too little return.
Dr. Zabaneh said that it came out in the consultation that the current system has caused emotional stress in students – literally carrying their body weight in books and equipment; teachers – unable to keep up with the demands of profession as it changed at lightning speed; and parents – often left to do the work their youngsters couldn’t.
A Curriculum Reform Committee with participation from across the education system, supported by a Steering Committee with non-governmental partners as well as the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU). Their report was submitted in May 2022.
School must be exciting for students, Dr. Zabaneh said: their need to explore and be active must be nurtured to create the best contributors to society – to cultivate critical thinking and values and encourage personal growth and development while also being inclusive and diverse in area of abilities and personalities.
