By BBN Staff: Twenty-seven-year-old Paul Jex Jr. has been sentenced to life in prison for raping a woman back in 2015.
Jex’s sentence was handed down in the Supreme Court today, following his conviction on July 20.
In court, prosecutor Riis Cattouse submitted that, while the sentencing guidelines showed a pattern of 8-15 years for those convicted of rape, the egregious manner in which the crime was conducted warranted that the convict be sentenced to life.
Cattouse noted that the offense was committed during a home invasion and that Jex held a gun to victim and demanded sex. He further reminded the court of the victim’s testimony, that Jex pointed the gun at her one-year-old child and threatened to shoot the child if she did not comply with his demand. Cattouse also noted that DNA evidence gathered from the towel Jex used to wipe himself off following the rape was what was used to connect him to the crime.
Offering mitigation pleas on Jex’s behalf was his father and sister, who said that Jex, a father of two children, was also a father figure to his younger siblings.
After hearing the sentencing guidelines and mitigation pleas, Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft sentenced Jex to life, with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
Jex was one of seven men involved in the home invasion.
