World Hepatitis Day observed

Posted: Thursday, July 28, 2022. 2:38 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: World Hepatitis Day is observed around the world on July 28.

The campaign “I can’t wait” was launched to highlight the need to accelerate the fight against viral hepatitis and the importance of testing and treatment for the real people who need it.

The World Health Organization (WHO) noted that the day highlights the importance to step up national and international efforts on hepatitis, encourage actions and engagement by individuals, partners and the public and highlight the need for a greater global response as outlined in the WHO’s Global hepatitis report of 2017.

WHO noted that July 28 was chosen since it is the birthday of Nobel-prize winning scientist Dr. Baruch Blumberg, who discovered hepatitis B virus (HBV) and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for the virus.

WHO says that low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the global elimination goals by 2030.
