By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Team Belize waved Belize’s National Flag high at the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on Thursday evening in Birmingham, England.

Alicia Thompson and Shaun Gill together held Belize’s flag during the Opening ceremony parade of countries.

Belize sent a contingent of 13 athletes to Birmingham 2022. Eleven of Belize’s athletes plus the delegates of the three sporting disciplines (cycling, athletics, and triathlon) were present.

Since he was participating in the triathlon on Friday, July 29, the morning after the Opening Ceremony, triathlete Kian Trejo didn’t participate in the opening. He had to be well rested for the event.

The other athlete that wasn’t there was cyclist Kaya Cattouse since she arrives in Birmingham until August 2. Kaya is currently competing in the Intelligentsia Cup in Chicago with her team LA Sweat.

But all the other 11 athletes plus the delegates of the three sporting disciplines Belize is competing in (cycling, athletics, and triathlon) were present.

Team Belize consists of:

Cycling: Alicia Thompson, Giovanni Lovell, Oscar Quiroz, Byron Pope, Justin Williams, Cory Williams, and Kaya Cattouse with Cycling Federation of Belize president Orson Butler.

Athletics: Shaun Gill, Ashontie Carr, Ashantie Carr, Hilary Gladden, and Brandon Jones accompanied by Belize Athletics Association vice president Jaheed Smith.

Triathlon: Kian Trejo and triathlon official Giovanni Alamilla Jr.

Head of Mission is Giovanni Alamilla Sr.

The Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA) Secretary General Allan Sharp is also at Birmingham 2022.
