By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Team Belize started off with a powerful win over Panama in the U-23 Central American Women’s Volleyball Championship in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
The Belize National Team won in straight sets 25-14, 25-11, 25-12 in the opening match of the regional tournament organized by the Association of Central American Volleyball Federations (Afecavol).
“We have mostly the same players as the ones we had in the Under-21 (where we were sub-champions); it is a higher category competition and we lost one of our best scorers, but we are going to try to make it a fruitful competition,” said Cuban coach José Fontes after the convincing win.
“The Afecavol competitions will be very even, even the level of the countries that were weaker before has increased and that helps us to put on a good show.”
Belize’s next match will be on Friday at 5:00 pm against Costa Rica.
Team Belize rests on Saturday.
Belize Team plays its third game on Sunday against Guatemala at 5:00 pm.
The team’s fourth game will be against homestanding Honduras on Monday at 7:30 pm.
On Tuesday, Team Belize will play against El Salvador at 5:00 pm before the final game against Nicaragua on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
