Chinese-state media issues Twitter threat to shoot down US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plane if she visits Taiwan

By Benjamin Flowers: Chinese state-affiliated media has issued a threat over Twitter that United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plane could be shot down if she decides to visit the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Pelosi, 82, departed the US today for a tour of Asia, with stops including Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore.

When CNN tweeted of Pelosi’s departure, Hu Xijin, editor of China’s state-run Global Times, replied to the Tweet, issuing the threat.

“If US fighter jets escort Pelosi’s plane into Taiwan, it is invasion,” Hu said. “The PLA has the right to forcibly dispel Pelosi’s plane and the US fighter jets, including firing warning shots and making tactical movement of obstruction. If ineffective, then shoot them down,” Hu said.

Tensions between the United States and China over Taiwan have flared up in the past few days, with Chinese President Xi Jinping, issuing a warning to Us President Joe Biden, about getting the US involved in China and Taiwan’s affairs.

“Resolutely safeguarding China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the firm will of the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people,” Xi said in a statement. “Those who play with fire will perish by it.”
