HIV claims 5,700 persons in the Caribbean in 2021

Posted: Friday, July 29, 2022. 9:24 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the UNAIDS on the global HIV response indicates that during the year 2021, 5,700 people in the Caribbean lost their lives to the virus, St. Kitts observer reports.

Despite the availability of treatments, the AIDS pandemic continues to take lives.

While the report indicates that the cases of new infections in the Caribbean have declined, it showed that the global response is in danger.

“These data show the global AIDS response in severe danger. If we are not making rapid progress then we are losing ground as the pandemic thrives amidst COVID-19, mass displacement, and other crises,” said UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima.

In addition, efforts to ensure all people living with HIV have access to antiretroviral treatment are faltering.

According to the report, some 10 million people living with HIV don’t have access to treatment.

There were an estimated 330,000 people living with HIV in the Caribbean in 2021.

AIDS-related deaths in the Caribbean declined by half (50 percent). There were 5,700 deaths last year.

New HIV infections decreased by 28 percent since 2010.

“While the Caribbean has not had the increase in new infections experienced in other regions, the rate of decline is far too slow,” explained Luisa Cabal, UNAIDS Director of the Latin America and Caribbean Regional Support Team.

Domestic HIV funding in low- and middle-income countries has also fallen for 2 consecutive years.
