International News: Migrants escape from “suffocating” trailer in Mexico

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday night, Mexican officials reportedly rescued almost 100 migrants who escaped from a suffocating trailer in Veracruz, Reuters report.

Authorities say that about 400 migrants were being taken in the trailer when they began to suffocate and broke through the roof of the trailer and employees at a near gas station helped them escape.

“Most of them jumped off,” paramedic Cristobal Cisneros said, adding that many had been treated for ankle or knee fractures.

A total of 94 migrants were found after a search of the truck and the immediate area.

According to the report, 32 of those found were Guatemalans, 5 Hondurans, 4 Ecuadorians, 2 Indians, 1 Salvadoran, and 1 Nepali, and the others were not identified since they left the scene.

This rescue follows a series of deadly incidents involving migrants traveling to Mexico’s northern border with the U.S.

Families in Guatemala are still mourning the tragic deaths of 53 migrants who died last month in San Antonio, Texas after being packed in a trailer in the sweltering heat.
