Kian Trejo completes triathlon at Birmingham 2022

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean triathlete Kian Trejo on Friday morning completed the Men’s Individual (Sprint Distance) Triathlon at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, finishing 43rd.

Trejo missed the Opening Ceremony on Thursday to rest for today’s event.

Alex Yee of England won gold in 50 minutes and 34 seconds (50:34). Hayden Wilde of New Zealand took silver in 50:47, and Matthew Hauser of Australia captured bronze in 50:50.

Trejo clocked 1:16:18, 25:44 behind Yee. And though he was far behind, Trejo has the satisfaction of having competed and completed the event.

Trejo did the swim in 13:14, the bike ride in 37:18, and the run 22:46 with 1:29 and 1:31 for the two transitions. Yee’s times were 8:49, 26:07, 14:31, with 0:50 and 0:17 for the transitions.

By the time he finished the swim, Trejo was 4:40 behind the leader. He took a minute and 29 seconds to transition to his bike. By then, he had fallen to 5:16 behind.

You could see during the four-lap bike ride that he was slowing down, doing the first lap in 8:48, the second in 8:49, the third in 10:02, and the fourth in 9:39. By the time he finished the bike ride after 52:01, Yee had completed the event and Trejo was trailing by 16:31.

His transition time of 1:31 to start the run put him back by 17:44.

He did the run in 22:46; 11:09 for the first lap and 11:37 for the second.

Still, Trejo was 1:40 faster than Timson Jude Irowane from the Solomon Islands who clocked 1:17:58.

After Trejo’s, Belize’s next competition comes up on Thursday, August 4.
