By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) on Friday held a recognition ceremony at the National Agriculture and Trade Show Grounds in Belmopan for the 29 Belizeans who completed the Agricultural Labour Technical Training Program in Colombia.
The 29 from Corozal, Orange Walk, Cayo and Toledo Districts returned to Belize last week after an 84-day intensive training program at Fundación Panaca in the South American country.
Minister Jose Abelardo Mai congratulated the 29 Agricultural Labour Technicians who completed what he said was an intense course in agriculture and animal production with practical activities. Mai said no agriculture course is expected to be easy because agriculture, in and of itself, is hard work.
He also thanked the Colombian Government that sponsored the course through the Presidential Agency for International Cooperation (APC Colombia) and reiterated that the new technicians were taught by the best specialized and expert professionals in the agriculture field by Fundación Panaca.
“We are prepared to make a difference,” said Noemi Romero at the recognition ceremony.
Romero said during the course they encountered many challenges they thought were impossible but were able to complete the course successfully. They learned, shared, and lived amongst diverse farmers and students from eight different countries learning new skills and methods to use in Belize’s agricultural sector.
In all, the 29 Belizeans and 240 students from the eight participating countries did 766 hours of work and study during the 84 days from April to July, said Fundación Panaca.
All the 29 new Agriculture Labour Technicians were given certificates by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise.
