By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the United States Embassy in Belize and Peace Corps Belize celebrated 60 years of service in Belize. The ceremony was held at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel in Cayo.
Present at today’s event was the U.S.Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Leyla Moses-Ones and Peace Corps country director, Tracey Hebert Seck.
Seck said that the volunteers share in the culture and diversity in Belize and relationships are built with the volunteers and the communities they serve.
Minister of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology, Francis Fonseca extended well wishes to the Peace Corps volunteers and stated, “ I wish you 2 years of happiness, productivity, and success in Belize.”
In 1962, the U.S. Peace Corp and Belize, then British Honduras agreed to cooperate in agriculture, health, education, and technology.
During their service in Belize, volunteers learn to speak Kriol and Spanish.
The Peace Corp’s mission is to promote world peace and friendship by meeting the need for trained men and women and to promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the people served.
