President Biden and President Xi exchange warnings on Taiwan

Posted: Friday, July 29, 2022. 2:03 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President, Xi Jinping warned each other during a phone call that lasted over 2 hours, the BBC reports.

According to the report, Biden asserted to his Chinese counterpart that the US strongly opposes any unilateral moves to change Taiwan’s status, however, the US policy on Taiwan has not changed.

But, Beijing had told the Biden administration to abide by the one-China principle saying that “whoever plays with fire will get burnt”. Under this policy, Washington does not recognize Taipei diplomatically.

There are heightened tensions over a report that House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi planned to visit Taiwan next month.

The State Department said that Pelosi had not announced any travel but China already warned of “serious consequences” if there was such a visit.

If the House Speaker were to visit Taiwan, she would be the highest-ranking US politician to visit the island since 1997.

The leaders also discussed arranging a face-to-face meeting, officials said. Since when Biden was US vice-president he hosted Xi during a visit to the US in 2015.

They also discussed other issues, including climate change and health security.
