UDP again calls for Kareem Musa’s resignation following an upsurge in violence

By Aaron Humes: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has intimated that Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries Kareem Musa is failing in both portfolios, but more so in the former.

It suggests that he focus more on “salvaging” the latter and hand over Home Affairs to “new leadership to find common sense solutions to arresting crime and violence across the country.”

But more importantly, it reiterates “common-sense recommendations” to fight crime, including reconvening the national security task force on crime-fighting, including social partners; a full-time conflict resolution committee with a remit to work around the clock to prevent escalation of disputes; providing counselling for security forces; and declare a moratorium on issuing gun licenses pending amending of criteria for eligibility, adding that it is “ready to meaningfully support any national crime-fighting task force convened by the government.”

But as evidenced by the surge in Belize City and Dangriga, families continue to grieve and communities live in terror “while the Police Commissioner is preoccupied with his statistics, diminishing victims’ worth to a number on his spreadsheet,” says the Opposition, presumably a reference to the murder rate.
