International News: Haitian Government says it will cover funerals of migrants in boat tragedy

Posted: Saturday, July 30, 2022. 10:43 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Haitian Government has indicated that it will cover the funeral expenses of the migrants who died in the boat tragedy last Sunday, Loop reports.

The bodies of 17 Haitian migrants were found as they tried to enter The Bahamas illegally.

“I received instructions from my government to do the funerals of the 17 people,” Chargé de Affairs at the Haitian Embassy in Nassau, Anthony Pierre Brutus said.

The funerals will take place in Nassau once the bodies are handed over to the Embassy.

The Haitian Government is calling on its residents who suspect their loved ones died in the tragedy to contact the embassy to provide them with pictures and other information that could lead to the identification of their deceased relative.

Brutus also thanked the Bahamian government for their response.

“This is an opportunity to put both governments together and see how that thing can never happen again. There were 17 people dead in the sea. We have to work together and see why that happen and stop them,” Brutus said.

Brutus also discouraged Haitians from making the dangerous journey by boat to the USA.
