By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On the occasion of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on Saturday, July 30, the Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs and the Human Trafficking Institute on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding to expand services to victims of human trafficking in Belize through collaboration and partnership.

The signing of the MOU was done at an event hosted by both the Ministry of Human Development and the Human Trafficking Institute as a part of the Blue Heart Campaign which operates out of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The Blue Heart Campaign is a global awareness-raising initiative to fight human trafficking and its impact on society.

The Blue Heart Campaign “seeks to encourage involvement from governments, civil society, the corporate sector and individuals alike, to inspire action and help prevent this heinous crime”.

“The Blue Heart represents the sadness of those who are trafficked, while reminding us of the cold-heartedness of those who buy and sell fellow human beings.

“The Blue Heart is increasingly recognized as the international symbol against human trafficking, representing the sadness of those who are trafficked while reminding us of the cold-heartedness of those who buy and sell fellow human beings.”

“As the theme of this year’s World Day Against Trafficking in Persons — “Use and Abuse of Technology” — reminds us, while technology can enable human trafficking, it can also be a critical tool in fighting it,” said United Nations’ Secretary General António Guterres in his World Day Against Trafficking in Persons message.

“We need governments, regulators, businesses and civil society joining forces to invest in policies, laws and technology-based solutions that can identify and support victims, locate and punish perpetrators, and ensure a safe, open and secure internet for all.”
