“Appalled” Garifuna Council warns Garifuna culture at risk after Hopkins shooting

By Aaron Humes: As Belize’s largest Garifuna village, and not a place usually known for violence, the news of a mass shooting in Hopkins, Stann Creek District, stirred the National Garifuna Council (NGC) to action.

In a statement, it admits to “significant concerns about the future of this community as a haven for both Belizean and foreign visitors,” adding that it can ill afford to take on a reputation as a haven for crime. “The cooperative existence and Garifunaduau that Hopkins has established all these years is threatened by such violent acts,” it continues.

The Council expresses condolences and best wishes to those hurt and killed and calls on police to speedily bring the killers to justice, and for the community to tap into its collectivity and give police the information they need to do so.
