By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has vowed to “vigorously pursue those responsible” for this morning’s mass shooting in the Village of Hopkins, Stann Creek District, which killed two and injured eight including three police officers.
In a statement, the Commissioner announced that “The Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries and The Belize Police Department take this opportunity to extend condolences to the families of the deceased victims and wish the injured a full and speedy recovery. We have assigned a senior investigation team to this incident headed by ACP Alden Dawson.”
He added, “At this time we have positively identified all three gunmen and are currently conducting a nationwide hunt for them.”
Among the injured, according to the Commissioner, some have been treated and released while the others are admitted in stable condition.
The attackers “kicked open the door and opened fired at the patrons (and) thereafter escaped in a waiting vehicle. So far we have in our custody the vehicle and its driver who is currently being interviewed. A number of video footages have been viewed which provided useful information to the investigators.”
He concludes, “We assure the people of Hopkins and the entire country that we will vigorously pursue those responsible and will leave no stone unturned to bring them to justice.”
These are the 10th and 11th murders for the month of July with the murder count unofficially standing at 71 at this hour.
