By Aaron Humes: This morning’s attack on the Wabinaha Bar in Hopkins, Stann Creek District, threatened to dampen festivities surrounding the village’s annual Hopkins Day weekend festival.
But the village’s chairman appeared on social media to say that the event would go on and that Hopkins would not be intimidated by perpetrators of gun violence.
23-year-old Belizean Noah Moro, an attendant of Silk Grass village, was remembered by his football compatriots at Roaring Creek F.C., while the other victim has been identified as a construction worker, 56-year-old Honduran Emilio Garcia.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams reported this afternoon that all eight of the injured, including three police officers and five civilians, had been treated and released from the Southern Regional Hospital. Two of them – 18-year-old Imiah Leanne Buller and a female minor, 15, are from Dangriga Town while Paul Bradley, 18; Shaquita Ellis, 25; and Jada Maximo, 20, are all Hopkins residents.
The officers injured are Gerald Jones, 42-year-old, Belizean Superintendent of Police and officer in charge of Dangriga; Rudel Pau,32-year-old, Belizean Corporal of Police; and Pamela Zuniga, Police Constable.
Condolences and condemnation have poured in from the likes of the Government of Belize, the Police Department, the National Garifuna Council and the United Democratic Party.
