By RubΓ©n Morales Iglesias: Orange Walkβs Progresso FC beat the Belmopan Bandits 1-0 recording their first ever win in the Premier League of Belize on Saturday.
Led by coach Charlie Slusher, whoβs had vast national and international experience as Belize top goalkeeper in his day, the Orange Walk prevailed over a team that has won many national championships on a penalty kick converted by Raheem Swazo in the 14β at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.
Before Progresso FC stepped up to join the ranks of the PLB, the Orange Walk District had gone many years without a team in Belizeβs premier league.
βThis move by the Progresso FC management must be commended since it has opened the doors for a lot of our talented footballers to now get the chance to step up their game at a higher level and further their development,β wrote Slusher on social media on July 29, one day before the season opener.
βSo much talent has been lost over the years but now the future looks bright. Thanks Again to the PFC management for making this big step for the players and people of Orange Walk. We know it will not be an easy road, but we are ready and with your support we will be able to do the impossible.β
Playing in two fronts, Progresso FC have started off on a good footing. Before their first home game next week against National Champions Verdes at the Louisiana Football Field, less than a full day after the Bandits game, they play against the Griga Conquerors in the second and definitive NBB-AIC semifinal against the Griga Conquerors on Sunday, July 31 in Dangriga.
The Belmopan Bandits will also be travelling to Dangriga next Sunday, August 7, to play against Wagiya in the PLB.
