By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Those involved in the illegal human smuggling of migrants to the U.S. had promised that those that paid extra would secure a “comfortable trip”, but several migrants lost their lives in the Texas tragedy in June, Reuters report.
Migrants Pablo Ortega and Julio Lopez had enjoyed complimentary beers, safe houses with video games, and even time at a ranch since they had borrowed thousands to pay the extra.
However, on June 27, they lost their lives along with over 60 migrants who were left in the back of a trailer in the sweltering heat in San Antonio, Texas.
Almost all the migrants that were in the trailer died in the suffocating heat in what is known as the deadliest smuggling incident in recent times in the U.S.
While officials continue to warn against the dangers of the journey, thousands continue to trek North in hopes of better opportunities.
Smugglers are also finding creative ways to advertise including “secure”, “special” or “VIP” which promise vehicle transportation and more comfortable stays.
Relatives say that Ortega agreed to pay $13,000 and Lopez $12,000, both hoping to reach the U.S. with plans of helping their family at home.
Mexican data from 2019 indicated that the average was $2000 to $7000 for Mexican migrants.
