By Rubén Morales Iglesias: With two games left in the U-23 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Team Belize measure up against El Salvador on Tuesday at 4:30 pm at the Jorge Galeano Gymnasium in Tegucigalpa and close on Wednesday against Nicaragua at 4:30 pm as well.
After losing on Monday night to Honduras 0-3 (20-25, 22-25, 18-25, Team Belize find themselves in dire straits in fifth place in the competition. So, winning today and tomorrow has become a necessity to not drop lower in the standings.
Dropping to a 1-3 record was not in the plans, particularly after winning the subchampionship in the U-19 Central American Championship here in Belize, but the reality is that the teams at this level are much stronger, and our squad is practically the same as the U-19. In fact, if we want to be technical, except for one player added and one player lost, it is the same. It shows as well how much our team is missing the services of Fatima Ramirez, who had to join her Edward Waters University team in Jacksonville, Florida, where she was awarded a full scholarship.
After four days of action, hosts Honduras are in the lead with a 4-0 record. Costa Rica, at 4-0, are second. Guatemala (3-2) are in third place, Nicaragua (2-2) are fourth, Belize (1-3) are in fifth, El Salvador (1-3) follow in sixth, and Panama (0-5) are seventh.
