International News: Mexican authorities kill smuggler ferrying 5 migrants

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, Mexican authorities shot and killed an alleged smuggler that was ferrying 5 migrants near the Mexico-Guatemala border, Latin Post reports.

According to reports, police were flagging down the vehicle at a checkpoint in Chiapas but the vehicle didn’t stop.

Afterward, authorities noted that someone inside the truck opened fire and police fired back.

During the exchange of gunfire, one of the smugglers identified as Fernando died and the driver, identified as Marcelino told authorities that they picked up the migrants in the Mexican border town of Comitán de Domínguez.

Authorities continue to warn migrants of the dangers of taking the journey to the U.S. illegally.
