By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Before ordering to kill Al Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, U.S. President, Joe Biden and his team wanted to understand where he was hiding, CNN reports.
According to the report, the drone strike that killed the terrorist in Kabul was the result of months of secret planning by U.S. authorities.
Those planning included a model of Zawahiri’s safe house that was inside the White House Situation Room for Biden to examine as he debated his options.
Zawahiri is believed to be one of the masterminds behind the September 11, 2001 attacks in the U.S.
According to the reports, President Biden tasked his team to ensure that no civilians including members of Zawahiri’s family were killed in the strike.
On Monday, President Biden emerged to proclaim success after the drone strike.
“People around the world no longer need to fear the vicious and determined killer. The United States continues to demonstrate our resolve and our capacity to defend the American people against those who seek to do us harm,” Biden said from the Blue Room Balcony of the White House.
Biden was “deeply engaged in the briefing and immersed in the intelligence,” a senior official said. He asked “detailed questions about what we knew and how we knew it.”
