By Benjamin Flowers: Police say that a lack of security at the door of the Wabinaha Bar and Night Club in Hopkins, Stann Creek District, played a major role in the mass shooting on Sunday, July 30, which left two dead and eight injured.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said today that the establishment is currently under investigation, and initial information gathered is that there were no police officers working special duties at the event.
Williams said that the club had hired civilian security guards and that the officers who were injured in the shooting had only just arrived there, making checks as part of routine patrols due to the Hopkins Day Festival.
“Based on what we have seen on the video footage, there was no search being conducted on anyone who was entering the nightclub by the security that the proprietors had hired that night,” Williams said.
Williams had announced yesterday that the establishment would also be investigated because a 15-year-old female was shot inside the club during the incident, which took place around 2:00 a.m.
