“Media Smart” – improving media literacy among youths

Posted: Tuesday, August 2, 2022. 3:02 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The U.S. Embassy in Belize is promoting a three-month training to help teachers and students become wiser consumers of traditional and modern media.

“Media Smart” has been described as a program to improve media literacy in the young adult population, while countering disinformation.

A succession of journalists are presenting on their ideas of media literacy and how young people consume media, and reminding of the obligations on both sides: to present the truth of the day’s activities locally and internationally in the case of media houses while also educating and in some cases entertaining, and for youth to recognize their worth as potential content creators as well as consumers – for example, posting videos of alleged police brutality or producing ‘explainer’ videos for TikTok.

Participants include LOVE FM’s Dale McDougal, Channel 7’s Cherisse Halsall, Channel 5’s Marlene Cuellar and others.
