By Benjamin Flowers: Three police officers were injured during the mass shooting in Hopkins Village on Sunday, July 30, and the Belize Police Department has deployed a senior team of investigators to thoroughly look into the incident.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said today that Assistant Commissioner Alden Dawson has been brought on to head the investigation team, along with Senior Police Superintendent Daniel Arzu, and Officer Commanding the Dangriga Police Formation Superintendent Gerald Jones, who was one of the officers shot in the incident. Williams went on to say that he personally assisted in the investigation.
“What we want to do is to make sure we put together the best possible case so that when the trial comes we can secure a conviction,” Williams said.
Police have since interviewed witnesses, obtained surveillance footage, spoken with several people who have identified the three accused men because they know them personally, and conducted identification parades to be sure that the men in custody for the offense are the ones witnesses saw committing the crime.
Other officers injured in the incident were Corporal Rudel Pau, 32, and Constable Pamela Zunia. Civilians injured in the incident were: Imiah Leanne Buller, 18; Paul Bradley, 18; Shaquita Ellis, 25; Jada Maximo, 20; and a 15-year-old female minor.
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Noah Moro and 56-year-old Honduran national Emilio Garcia died from gunshot injuries sustained during the incident.
