Police say Hopkins mass shooting stemmed from an altercation over deceased Noah Moro’s girlfriend

By Benjamin Flowers: Two dead and eight injured in Belize’s second mass shooting on record and amidst the outrage many have asked the question “Why?”. Today Commissioner of Police Chester Williams gave preliminary information into the mass shooting in Hopkins Village on Sunday, saying that the incident was the result of an altercation over the affections of a woman.

Williams said that the girlfriend of one of the victims, 23-year-old Noah Moro, was approached by the suspects who tried to court her. She refused their advances and Moro later approached the man and asked what they were doing.

The three suspects and Moro then got into an altercation, which later turned violent.

“The suspects left briefly and came back into the nightclub by stamping the door open and then opening fire first at Moro and then indiscriminately in the nightclub, hitting the other person who died and eight other persons including three policemen,” Williams said.

The three suspects then got into two separate vehicles, one belonging to one of them and the other belonging to a Canadian national, and drove off. Williams said that the Canadian national has since been detained and will be charged for abetment to commit murder.

He also noted that the incident is not Belize’s first mass shooting, reminding that there was the 2008 mass shooting at the Putt Putt bar in Belize City where a total of 14 people were shot.
