By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s participation in Athletics at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham was practically over in a day with only one event left for the team on Friday.

So far, only three of five of our athletes have competed as Ashontie Carr could not take to the track for the Women’s 400m because she fell ill. That leaves her sister Ashantie for the long jump on Friday.

On Tuesday, August 2, Shaun Gill ran the 100m in 10.76 seconds. Gill competed in Round 1 – Heat 8. Conroy Jones of Jamaica won that heat in 10.28.

A little earlier, Brandon Jones also finished in sixth place in 10.91 seconds in the Men’s 100m in Round 1 – Heat 7. The heat winner was Benjamin Azamati from Ghana who ran the 100m in 10.19.

The semifinals and finals are set for later Wednesday.

In the Women’s 100m, Hilary Gladden was sixth out of seven clocking 12.72 seconds in Round 1 – Heat 2.

Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica was the heat winner in 10.99.

Earlier in the day, Brandon Jones fouled out in the Men’s Long Jump missing his three attempts in the Qualifying Round.

As mentioned above, on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, Ashontie Carr did not start in the Women’s 400m Round 1-Heat 4 which was won by Great Britain’s Ama Pipi of England in 52.48.

Belize’s only track athlete left to compete is Ashantie Carr who is trying her luck in the Women’s Long Jump 11:40 am (4:40 am Belize) on Friday, August 5.
