By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Health Kevin Bernard said the vaccination against polio in Belize fell by 20% during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking on the Love FM Morning Show on Wednesday, Bernard said before the pandemic Belize prided itself of a 95% vaccination rate for children against polio, but the pandemic caused that number to fall to 75% coverage.

“We’re pushing very hard to get our younger population to get that vaccination,” said Minister Bernard.

He said the Ministry of Health is concerned because a case was identified recently in the United States.

“That has triggered the Ministry to get on the ground, do more field work and get those young persons vaccinated. I’m encouraging those parents, mothers ‘Get your young children vaccinated. If you miss a few dates get to your clinics and get your young child vaccinated. It’s important’,” Minister Bernard said, while making mention of other diseases that are looming over us like Monkeypox.
