By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Game day. Belize vs El Salvador” wrote Verdes FC in a social media post in the afternoon before the return match against Platense at the Cuscatlán Stadium in San Salvador.

“Countdown to game time at 8:00 pm. Belize time. Our boys are ready to represent our nation. Verdes for life!”

Last week the two teams played to a 0-0 draw in Belmopan. Tonight, they must decide a winner meaning the game may go into overtime and even penalty kicks. However, none of the two teams want to reach that far.

Last night Verdes trained under heavy rain at the Cuscatlán Stadium.

“Currently the rain continues here but our boys are determined to undergo their training,” said Verdes at the time asking fans to support the team from afar with words of encouragement.

“Come on Belize and show some love for our boys. One Team, One Nation BELIZE.”

Goalkeeper Woodrow West told Salvadoran newspaper El Gráfico that Verdes wasted the opportunity at home but showed that they can fight man to man with Platense. West said Verdes must play with the same conviction and think positively that they can win.

Platense’s coach Erick Dowson Prado said his team should have won in Belize but their lack of effectiveness denied them the victory. But tonight, according to El Gráfico, Platense plans on changing that.

Last week started with only four Belizean players, namely Woodrow West in goal, Jahron Myvette in defense, and Darrel Myvett and Jesse August in midfield. All seven foreigners started; that is Mexicans Edwin Villeda Bernal, Christian Ramírez Sánchez, and Waldo Jiménez Medina, Colombian Camilo Márquez Fajardo, and Argentine Facundo Garnier, and Paraguayans Luis Ibarra and Mario Narváez, a Paraguayan centre-back.

Expect the same this week with West in goal. Jiménez, Narváez, Ramírez, and Myvette in defense. August, Myvett, Villeda, and Márquez in the middle, and Ibarra and Garnier up front.

Last week Evral Trapp replaced Jiménez and Krisean Lopez went in for August at the 46’, Eldon Reneau substituted Garnier in the 69’, and Desmond Wade entered for Márquez in the 90’.

There’s a good possibility that Lopez can start tonight.

Platense is also expected to repeat its lineup of José González in goal; Jaime Ortiz, Mario Martínez, Wilber Arizala, and Juan Barahona in defense; Helden Alfaro, Marvin Aranda, Juan Aimar, Carlos Anzora, and Elvin Alvarado in midfield; and Jhon Machado as forward.

They won’t have substitutes Irvin Herrera and Ronald Padilla due to injury. Herrera subbed for Machado and Melvin Alfaro for Aranda in the 58’, Brian Martinez entered for Alvarado in the 78’, and Wilmer Novoa subbed for Anzora in the 88’.

The winner of the home and away games advances to the next round against Salvadoran champions Alianza.
