Taiwanese enterprise Agriforward donates over 1 million eco-friendly straws to Ministry of Tourism

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The co-founders of Taiwanese enterprise Agriforward donated 1,024,000 eco-friendly Tatami straws to the Ministry of Tourism & Diaspora Relations on Friday morning.

The Ministry of Tourism described Agriforward Co. Ltd., as a production company and a social enterprise.

“Tatami straws are made of natural Lepironia articulata stems through properly dried and sterilized, without any plastic and chemical additions,” said the Ministry of Tourism.

“In addition to its safety and biodegradable properties, tatami straws also provide a good user experience which is similar as plastic ones and better than other substitute products.”

The Tourism Ministry said the Tatami straws were presented by Mr. You-Ren Hsu and Ms. Yi-Chia Lin to the Minister of Tourism & Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler and CEO in the Ministry of Tourism, Nicole Solano.

The Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Belize David Kuan-Chou Chien and the Chief of Taiwan Technical Mission Robert Pan were present for the presentation.

The Ministry of Agriculture said in a post after the Agriforward founders met with Minister Jose Abelardo Mai on July 26, that Agriforward is interested in introducing the plant to Belize with the intention of producing the straw here in Belize.

MAFSE said the biodegradable Tatami straw is an affordable alternative to the plastic straw.

“The company’s goal is to promote climate smart solutions for agriculture and tourism in Belize,” said MAFSE.
