By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, August 2, 2022, Guatemalan authorities raided a ranch near the Guatemalan border with Mexico, the Associated Press reports.
There, authorities saw late model vehicles, guns and an alleged leader of a smuggling ring that moved migrants from Guatemala to the United States.
Police detained the alleged leader, Felipe Alonso along with 3 others who were targets of U.S. prosecutors who were wanted in connection with the death of a Guatemalan migrant in Texas in 2021.
According to the report, prosecutions of migrants has been challenging since migrants are almost never willing to testify against the smugglers.
The arrest comes amidst heightened tensions between Guatemala and the U.S.
U.S. President, Joe Biden has indicated that immigration was a shared challenge for the hemisphere.
