Posted: Saturday, August 6, 2022. 10:44 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  Following the visit by the U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, there are reports of heightened tensions between China and Taiwan. Pelosi’s visit marked the first visit of a high ranking U.S. official in 25 years.

And today, Taiwan has detected multiple Chinese aircrafts and naval vessels in what could be a simulated attack.

According to the Defence Ministry, 14 of 20 Chinese aircrafts crossed the Taiwan strait median line today.

Belize’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eamon Courtenay says that Belize unequivocally supports Taiwan.

Courtenay tweeted: “ All #people have a right to #selfdetermination and to live in #peace. All countries have a right to exist peacefully with their neighbours. #Belize unequivocably supports #Taiwan and its people as they pursue peace development and international cooperation.”

Courtenay was joined by Belize’s Speaker of the House of Representatives, Valerie Woods who said “With threats of authoritarianism,Taiwan remains a resilient determined practitioner of democracy. My fervent hope is constructive dialogue will prevail and respect for the rules based international system will be upheld for peace, stability and security.”

Taiwan’s President Tsai ing Wen has called on the international community to support democratic Taiwan: “Our government & military are closely monitoring China’s military exercises & information warfare operations, ready to respond as necessary. I call on the international community to support democratic Taiwan & halt any escalation of the regional security situation.”
