Friends for Conservation and Development, Toucan Education Program team up to plant 1,000 trees in Cayo District

By Aaron Humes: As a start toward keeping the critical cover of Belize’s forests planted and sustained, Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD), Toucan Education Program and supportive donors including the Belize Tourism Board, Central TV and Internet and Belizing, planted 329 trees across the Vaca Forest Reserve in western Cayo on August 4.

The Plant a Tree Reforestation Program helps purchase and plant seedlings to restore degraded forested areas; in this case, the riparian zone of Cacao Creek, which is a tributary of the Macal River and a vital source of water for wildlife in the reserve. 20 companies and organizations participated in this first planting, which helps conserve key water sources, prevent further erosion and siltation in the area and improve soil quality and preserve wildlife habitat.

Toucan Education Programs provides study-abroad service learning and cultural co-curricular education for international students, and each student visiting Belize has two seedlings purchased to support the program and reduce the environmental footprint of travel. Companies and organizations are encouraged to show their commitment to the environment and purchase seedlings as well as send staff out to oversee their planting. The goal is to plant 1,000 trees across Cayo District for 2022.

TEP says monies go to purchasing the seedlings from local community groups, transportation to areas designated by FCD and initial monitoring for six months, while FCD selects the plant species and the number of seedlings required and produces an annual progress report.
