International News: UN Sec-Gen says attack on nuclear plant in Ukraine is “suicidal”

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United Nations, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that the rocket fire around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine is “suicidal”, CNN reports.

The nuclear plant is the largest of its kind in Europe.

“Any attack on nuclear power plants is a suicidal thing. I hope that these attacks will end,” Guterres said.

The plant is operating at reduced capacity since March when Russian forces captured it. Ukrainian technicians are still at work at the plant.

Ukraine’s state energy company Energoatom said that one worker was injured by Russians shelling around the plant on Saturday.

The company added that 3 radiation monitoring sensors were also damaged.

“This time a nuclear catastrophe was miraculously avoided, but miracles cannot last forever,” the company noted.

The chairman of the company said that on Sunday, 1 strike was up to 20 meters away from the processed fuel storage area.
