By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Nicaraguan Government is continuing its crackdown on critics of its administration with closures of 7 Catholic radio stations and the investigation of a Roman Catholic Bishop, Latin Post reports.
The Nicaraguan police say they are investigating Bishop Rolando Alvarez, head of the Matagalpa diocese.
The Bishop has been an outspoken critic of the government of President Daniel Ortega.
The police say the Bishop is being investigated for “organizing violent groups,” and inciting them to carry out “acts of hate.”
The Bishop is now under house arrest and police have surrounded and cordoned off Alvarez’s residence.
Bishop Alvarez prayed in the street and approached the police with a crucifix.
The Bishop is now forced to celebrate Mass from inside his house.
VaticanNews says that Bishop Alvarez and 12 other people have been stuck in his residence since Thursday.
The Bishop is appealing to authorities to stop harassment, requesting that religious freedom be respected.
