By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Two Toledo and one Stann Creek cooperatives last week visited two Valley of Peace cooperatives in the Cayo District to strengthen institutional capacities, said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

Both the Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) Program in the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Agriculture collaborated on the exchange visit coordinated through the Department of Co-operatives and the Extension Services.

Farmers from Los Buenos Amigos Co-operative Society Ltd and Trio Farmers for Development Cooperative Society from the Toledo District and from Chileros del Sur Cow Pen of the Stann Creek District visited with Servicios Varios El Progresso Co-operative Society and Laguna Farmers’ Co-operative Society in Valley of Peace, Cayo District.

“The purpose of the visit was to strengthen their institutional capacities through learning and sharing of experiences,” said MAFSE.

The southern farmers also made a field trip to the production site of Laguna Farmers’ Co-operative. This visit had the objective of enabling the participants to learn and share practical experiences in the different agricultural production systems and the best practices utilized for various crops.

“While the direction of the training was two-fold (organizational and agricultural production and marketing) more emphasis was given to organizational and management aspects,” said MAFSE.

The Cooperative Department and the Extension Service have been conducting these types of exchanges so that farmers improve their farming techniques and production.

“The aim is for capacity building and development that will improve knowledge and practices of the producer organizations enabling them to integrate the experience gained into their daily activities and operations,” concluded MAFSE.
