International News: Cuba struggles to contain oil depot fire

Posted: Tuesday, August 9, 2022. 11:42 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Cubans are experiencing massive blackouts with 40% of the country’s main fuel storage facility destroyed, Reuters report.

On Friday, August 5, lightning struck a large oil storage tank in Matanzas, Cuba causing a huge fire.

Matanzas is the largest port for receiving crude oil and fuel imports and the fuel oil and diesel are stored there and mainly used to generate electricity on the island.

The island had already been experiencing fuel shortages with people lined up for days to get some fuel.

Despite efforts by firefighters, the fire spread to a second storage tank and engulfed the 4-tank area on Monday.

Cuban authorities say that 1 firefighter died and 14 went missing when the 2nd tank blew up on Saturday.

Helicopters joined the efforts today to try and out the fire.
