By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that as of August 8, there were 30,189 cases of Monkeypox around the world.
In the United States, there have been 8,933 confirmed cases of the disease.
Experts say that most of the reported cases are among men who identify as gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men.
The CDC as well as other organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO) are closely monitoring the Monkeypox outbreak.
The U.S. is distributing 2 vaccines that may be used for the prevention of Monkeypox, the JYNNEOS, and ACAM2000.
Both vaccines have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the prevention of Monkeypox.
WHO reminds the public that the risk of monkeypox is not limited to men who have sex with men. Anyone who has close contact with someone who is infectious is at risk.
